Try hitting F9 in BIOS (load setup defaults). If that doesn't fix it. it could be the HD isn't seated correctly, bad hard disk or bad motherboard.

On a T40, the easiest way is to use an alagator clip hooked to the metal pieces (springs) that hold the wireless card into the PCI slot.

The X31 has its security chip on a daughter board at the left front. (right next to the firewire port) Make sure that board is well connected.

If I remember correctly, R30 uses a regular 8-pin R24RF08. It is under the PC card cage and under a black plastic sheet. You need only to remove the keyboard, palmrest and PC card cage.
