Just a thought, but what do you think the possibilities are of finding a software solution to the password problem on IBM's ?

I don't understand, are you reffering to a software solution only, meaning to run a specific software on the locked laptop and gather the password?

Well, is not possible, because the 6th block is protected, a smbus utility software can't read that part.
Besides, you can't boot the thing up, is locked.
