Hi, that should be:
1. Video Adapter (if installed)
2. System Board

The X31 has its security chip on a daughter board at the left front. (right next to the firewire port) Make sure that board is well connected.

Hi.
Have you thought of reflowing the graphics chip. you can find some info here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=57021. i've done it myself on two t40 boards sucessfully. the symtoms were a system freeze but they can range from no screen at all to possibly what you've got. i'm hopefully about to aquire an x31 board with your same symtoms and I'm going to give i a try. If and when i do get it i'll come back to this post with the results.

Hello,

T40 are well known to have these problems, reballing the chip normally should fix them, but I don't think is the case here.
Richk has also a good point, the subboard may give the above symphtoms...

P.S Topic moved to the Hardware section

Interesting thankyou Victor
The reason i came to that idea was because i have been looking at a mobo on ebay and the seller described first a freezing problem that happened when he moved it. He seems to have spent a long time trying to fix it.then he describes getting the 4 beeps. here is the url:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200204823824

Perhaps his daughter board is loose. i've won the item and have been in communication with the guy and he says he has a new mobo on the way. But maybe his daughter board is the problem. I have sent him the link to this page. i dont need the board if he wants to keep hold of it, it was just an experiment. ( also i dont have a daughter board or any other x31 bits for that matter to plug into it to test. I didn't know when i bid for the item that the security chip was on the daughter board!!) Very Happy
Can the mobo be booted without the daughter card plugged in?

I suggested he give it another try making sure the sub board was well connected. Ive just heard from the guy - he went back and plugged it all in an LO! it all worked Laughing
We've agreed to cancel the auction. Thanks for the advice, you've just saved someone a load of cash.
