This is a bit of a long shot, but I recently picked up a damaged Dell X300.
Someone had attempted to remove the security password by removing the eerom. Without success I might add, they have however screwed up the network card.
I can boot from USB, and will therefore be able to sort out any other issues.
What they have removed is the chip at location U527 and since I don't have a similar board to compare with, I wondered if anyone could confirm this is a 24LC04 as I suspect, or have they removed something completely different.
Any help here would be much appreciated.
Regards.

I don't have a board here, but if that IC is a 8 pin SOIC, then is a 24C04 more than sure. You have to mount another one, then use asset.com to stamp a new(or old) service tag in it. _________________ Victor Voinea

Thanks for that, and although I'm 99% sure it is a 24C04, (it is an 8 pin SOIC) I'd like to be certain. BTW the location might be U517 rather than U527, the screen printing is a little unclear.
I'll take another look and make sure only the active pins actually go anywhere, and if I am feeling brave (or foolhardy) I will probably pop a 24C04 on the board and see what happens. Since the LT didn't cost much I wont be too upset if there is a puff of irreversible smoke. |

Then don't worry about it, do it..
Just to remind you that pin4 is the GND and pin8 is Vcc, if that is of any use. _________________ Victor Voinea

...and I have the datasheet for the 24C04, only trouble is I can never get the smoke back in to the chips once it comes out. |
