Hi,
1. Wrong eeprom pins, bad connections or bad GND.
2. Wrong interface. Please post some pictures of it, otherwise we can't help you...
3. Use native COM ports, not USB. I had to mention it.
Good luck! _________________ Victor Voinea

Not sure why it is not working, I quadruple checked my connections, even going as far as taking a multimeter toe them to verify contunuity. I took an old 9 pin to 25 pin serial connector and cut the 25 pin connector off, then metered the exposed wires per the diagram, then cut away the un-neaded wires.
Tried a second system as the Administrator system as well. Only thing I can figure is it doesn't like the particular diodes I'm using, or the removable security chip on the bottom of the system board is causing problems? I'm going to try to remove it next and see what happens. |

Forget the TCPA sub-board, has no relevance.
You have a bad circuit/port/connections. Without pictures, we can't help.. _________________ Victor Voinea

Got it, bad ground on the serial port. Scrounged up another serial connector and it worked like a charm.
Thanks for the fix, otherwise it could have been a little costly. |

I want to advice to others about the diferent keyboards.
the IBMpass Lite decript the password as QD;IN
But this password didn't work because my TP have a french keyboard (AZERT).
The IBMpass Lite decript for a US keyboard.
I replaced QD;IN for the leters in this position in a US keyboard..voilá
my password is ADMIN
I hope this help to others with non US keyboard.
Thanks again for all this info in your site.

I was given a T23 last week with a BIOS password in place that no one could remember what the password was. I came across this site while searching for a fix as pulling batter did not reset the password (as decribed above). I went to the local radio shack and bought all the parts listed (among a few other additions) and built the jig. To my amazement the process worked on the first try. Thank you for the info.
Not sure if anyone thought of doing this but i put in dip switches on the board so that i could solder the leeds to the TP and turn them on one at a time in stead of soldering them while the unit was on. worked like a charm… i will try and attache a picture if i can. |

Well I followed the tutorial and it worked perfect. I have a thinkpad 760xl with a 93c46 eeprom. Got the password, put everything (mostly) back to gether, turn it on and get error 178. Thats a "eeprom is not functional" error. So is it dead or fixable? |

Some eeprom's leg got disconnected when you've desoldered the wires, or something. _________________ Victor Voinea

Hi, I have a thinkpad t61 with lost POP.
What means that: "For TCPA unlock, W24RF08 license and TCPA reset service are required"?
My Questions are:
1: All t61 have a TCPA-cryption?
2: Can i use this RS232-TTL as Interface to communicate with PC8394T-Chip (or t61 dont have PC8394T) for unlock?
hmm, I'm very unsure?
Thanks for victor, very good Tutorial and Support.
Sorry for my english!
Best wishes from Germany!! |

-When passphrase option is ENABLED in TP's BIOS, the password is not in scancode - it is hashed. Sometimes in the eeprom is only set a certificate.
If that is the case, the eeprom needs to be patched to reset the lock. Patching is the TCPA reset service, while W24RF08 is the eeprom writer which is obviuosly required.
1. - Not at all. Only when passphrase is on.
2. - Yes, you may use the driven i2c interface. The blueprint is included in R24RF08 setup kit.

Hi Victor, Thanks for the Posting.
I have now dismantled my T61 and have located the Chip on the Backside of the Board.
It seem how the layout on the "ThinkPad Unlocking Software-News" Topic named: Alternative Layout.
It's the P24508-Chip (passphrase or not passphrase, hmm?).
I have upload a Photo here: My TP 61 Backstage
Sorry i have many Questions , but i dont have understand your Answer nr. 2; This Interface here is not equal with your driven i2c interface, because the Values of the C's are 10uF and in your Blueprint 0,1uF. Is that ok?
Thanks, Slooper |
