Hello All,

Can anyone pls suggest a way out of this problem::
we have a thinkpad t40 laptop, and the hdd password was the same as the power on password but now for some reason neither password is working. the power on password was then disabled through the bios..but the hdd password screen then came up....

is there a way to bypass the hdd password? i dont care about the hdd really i want to get some of my files out then i can reformat...will norton ghost work for this? it is a fujitsu hard drive, 40 gb

thanks,
Mo

Hi Mo,

You cannot bypass the HD password. You need to find the password, then unlock the drive.
We developed the HD security tools for this job but data recovery is not implemented. This is a forensical use and we agreed to not implement this yet with the tools.
Just for the sake of argumets, to recover a drive is a must, but the data must belong to the owner.

There are some aspects here:
1. A drive password cannot be changed by the TP itself. This is no way other than somebody set a password to HD. Moreover if somebody changed your password then this person had access to your original password.
2. To protect the HD you can set a user password or user+master password. Usually, 99.99% of TP users can't resist to the oportunity to set the master password and I believe you did it also. It is hard to believe that you forgot both of them.

Oh just to mention, Norton ghost can't recover your files.
Thats all.
Regards
