here is the question.... could we build the DRIVEN interface using SMD components?

i know the moral to the story is K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) but it would be nice to SHRINK the interface to a concealable size...

would the tolerances and voltage change?

capacitors 0.1µF http://www.newark.com/taiyo-yuden/lmk105bj104kv-f/ceramic-multilayer-capacitor/dp/86H5618

resistors 4.7k ohm http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?sku=59M5086&_requestid=156900

MAX232ACPE+ http://www.newark.com/maxim-integrated-products/max232acpe/transceiver-ic/dp/68K4544

i also saw these http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/browse.jsp?N=500003+1001967+294105+283589+252745+2996x91+462530&Ntk=gensearch_001&Ntt=categorynumber85895&Ntx=&getResults=true&appliedparametrics=true&locale=en_US&originalQueryURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.newark.com%2Fjsp%2Fsearch%2Fbrowse.jsp%3FN%3D500003%2B1001967%26Ntk%3Dgensearch_001%26Ntt%3Dcategorynumber85895%26Ntx%3D%26getResults%3Dtrue%26appliedparametrics%3Dtrue%26locale%3Den_US
they are smd 232 chips would any of these work? or stick to the hybrid setup?

ZENER DIODE http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?sku=01P3368&_requestid=158632 would these zeners work?

could the power source be 3 1.5v button cells? or a 4.5v car remote battery

see i want to make a circuit with the IC on top ant a small drawn circuit with the SMD's on the opposite side... so the footprint would be no bigger than the IC, just slightly thicker

think of a thumb drive with a DB9 connector....

cost of the components is not the issue @ less than $10 USD... more of do i have the proper components... in theory it should be the same right?

or the whole thing could be contained in the 4th slot in a battery compartment

Perfect, but I am not sure what is the problem or how can we help you?
Oh, button cells too? Come on! Wink
