if you change the driven-i2cprog.pdf this way, it will be more clear.

Is it possible to use those USB-to-RS232 chip at the input stage before the MAX232 chip?

Is there such a USB cable readily made available as it might be difficult to find a COM1 port on new workstation.

Yes, many of them work but we stronlgly suggest you a PCMCIA/Express card/PCI card COM port.
