I have an R51 type 2888 and the only chip I see on the board is 24RF08CN with 8 leads. I noticed on the schematics it has 24RF08C with 8 leads. Is this the correct one?

Wow...this is the best! I thought all hope was lost and I would have to get another motherboard for my R51. I found this site by accident and am VERY glad I did! Made the simple circuit, hooked it up, ran the reader and boom...I had a bin file! Ran the password decrypter and found it no problem! For those skeptical, this really does work like a charm!! Thank you VERY VERY much for posting this for all to use! I'm sure everyone who has used it appreciates your work!! Thanks!

600e/600x are using 24RF08 14 pin. If it is 600 only then it has 24C01

I started in computers when they were vacuum tubes
I retired from IBM 1991 and we hadn't done component level since transistors much less on laptops just replaced HDD and system boards when we had password problems
pictures of motherboard attached in my email
I hope
one has board mounted on sytem board removed
other with it on system board
I just don't see eeprom
couldn't see how to attach jpg to post on forum

underneath flipped over board will solder and put together tomorrow
got my parts at radio shack forgot solder, displaced from my shop is a pain
but will give it a whirl tomorrow

hello
I have a thinkpad 765D, with the password lost. I unsoldered the C46 eeprom, but when soldering wires to it, i broke two legs. Is it possible to replace the eeprom by an other one, and if yes, what to write on it before?

Of course it is possible. Buy a SOIC 93LC46 or 93C46 and replace the broken one.

We will send you a dump to write there just email us.
The laptop value is about $100, but seems like you are so much in love with it. Very Happy

Thanks for providing such great documentation and software.

I have a thinkpad A21M that i bought used from my IT manager, he couldn't remember his supervisor password, so i had to find out the hard way.

The EEPROM chip is near the RAM slots, but hidden, i had to unmount everything to access the back of the motherboard. Thanks to IBM maintenance doc, they explain how to take your laptop apart step by step. If you keep the screws with each parts, and follow the documentation, you can put it back together without forgeting anything.

I used the supervisor password that i found, and changed it, i remember i could reboot with windows.

I removed the wires, and now when i reboot i get a 0187 error
EAIA Data access error. And i found in that forum that it's not a pretty error.

I think i'll take it apart again, tomorow.

I was so close :/

Um, the 0187 EAIA means that eeprom could not be accessed. Usually is a misscontact there, you can check the soldering regions to see what is the cause.
I am sure you'll solve that, just do it carefully.

Hello Victor and everybody! Many thanks for a great and helpful site.

I have a Thinkpad 600x which I believe the supervisor password had been set by the previous user/owner (this machine was an eBay acquisition ages ago). It only became apparent when the cmos battery ran out and was replaced with a new one. As a result I can not even go to the bios through F1. Will I still be able to read the eeprom, say during the password prompt after the 161/163 error page?
