Hi Viktor, I have studied your instructions and know I can remove the SVP but does the same procedure work on a power on password.
The SVP is not set but the pop and hdd is.
I am not concerned about the HDD password as I have an unlocked drive I can use.
thank you |

I don't want to just remove it I would like to "read" it as 90% of IBM users when they set a pop they normally use the same password to set the hdd password and this would allow me access to the drive. |

When you are setting a new hdd password you now havve 2 options
User and User + Master
User is self explanatry but if you set User + Master you can access the set up screen but you cannot change the hdd password without the Master password |

HD master pwd is used as a backup in case the user forgot his pwd.
Only the UP can lock a drive, MP can unlock it only when security level is not MAX.
In Thinkpads, seting USER+MASTER will allow you to set each password, the sec. level will be set to HIGH.
If only USER is set, then the BIOS assigns automatically the same password for MASTER so the drive will have the same pwd for both UP and MP, but the security will be MAX (dependig on BIOS version and model).
In this case the MP cannot be used to unlock the drive only to secure erase it (it is an ATA command).

Nope, you can. They are different passwords. |

how does one remove the pop password is svp password is set on?
I read on ibm manual that if you want to unset the pop password you need to type svp password...
On the instruction in this forum shows how to get svp off...but was assumed that you can access to bios.... |

Quoted from a randomly chosen HM Manual
Quote: | How to remove the power-on password
To remove a POP that you have forgotten, do the following:
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Remove the battery pack. ...
3. Remove the backup battery. ...
4. Turn on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear. The POP has been removed.
5. Reinstall the backup battery and the battery pack. |
After doing the above operations, the POST will show you the date/time error and will stop asking for SVP to enter BIOS. If SVP is not set will ask the HDP, if neither this was set then BIOS screen will show up, finally.
Even if the POP is erased you still need the SVP, that's the point |
