Hi,

I bought a supervisor password enabled x61s. But as it was bootable via pxe, I installed just installed ubuntu and was ready to go... no need for that password for daily work... But there are still some features, that I can't use, because I cannot enable them in the bios. (KVM for example)

As my system is up and running, I can decode the bios-settings in linux via dmidecode. The following settings are displayed:

Code:
Handle 0x002C, DMI type 24, 5 bytes
Hardware Security
        Power-On Password Status: Disabled
        Keyboard Password Status: Disabled
        Administrator Password Status: Enabled
        Front Panel Reset Status: Unknown

About the security system it says:
Code:
Handle 0x001E, DMI type 10, 6 bytes
On Board Device Information
        Type: Other
        Status: Disabled
        Description: IBM Embedded Security hardware

Handle 0x001F, DMI type 11, 5 bytes
OEM Strings
String 1: IBM ThinkPad Embedded Controller -[7MHT24WW-1.02    ]-

It says, that the IBM embedded security hardware is disabled. Does that indicate, that the password isn't protected by TCPA?
I'm weighting the time and effort that would be needed to unlock the bios.

Thank you for your help.

cheers
malfi

TCPA lock is when the laptop has passphrase ON in BIOS> Security. That is different from Security CHIP - On/Off and has no relevance.

In fact the TCPA module is always on, when you see "Security subsytem disabled" that only means its functions are not available to the O.S. (certain applications like fingerprint reader software, encryptions, etc.).

If you want to unlock the BIOS, use R24RF08 and read the eeprom located under the modem MDC subboard. If the passphrase is off, then is a straight recovery with IBMpass.
For TCPA lock, yes, you'll have to purchase the writer and the service.

Good luck!
