Yes, that's right. Only way how to easily clear the password here is to rewrite bios chip.
In these models is a 8 pin serial flash.
You can download a bios update on HP pages. Start a setup on any laptop and althrough it would tell you that it's not the right computer where to flash it, in /SWsetup/... directory will be a full bios .BIN file which has 1024KB.
You should have some programmer to flash it in the chip. It's without a security zone so after flashing it the serial number, service tag and all things like that will be clear.
enjoy it, I had it finished in 20 minutes.

It's a flash ROM. I can't tell you exactly what chip was used, there are many equivlent chips and even in the same model you may find different chips.
If I could see a plain picture with mainboard I or a forum member could could point you in the right direction. _________________ Victor Voinea

You have to reflash that. with a fresh BIOS code. that's what you have to do.
Do not short onboard chips, even if they a classic i2c eeproms like in Dell's, never do that! That is a dumb idea came from someone that supposelly has never seen nor operate an eeprom programmer in his life.. _________________ Victor Voinea
