Hi There, Nice forum.. My kind of reading!!

I was wondering if I anybody could tell me if an Intel 82801 chip can be replaced with a fresh new one or does it need programming?

I have a HP laptop given to me to try and fix, and I can see signs of a hotspot in the middle of the chip, and a clear piece of plastic that goes on top of it, has a hole melted in it right over this spot, and when you turn the laptop on, lights around the keyboard light up, but no display, and it doesn't get any further than that.. The 82801 get immediately hot when its turned on.

I do a bit of smd rework in my job, and I thought I might give this a go. Ive never worked on a laptop motherboard before, but i regularly replace GPU's on XBOX360's, so the job of replacing the bga, should be do-able, but the chip is very foreign to me..

Any help much appreciated

Intel 82801 (aka southbirdge) can be simple replaced. Is not quite an easy job, you have to re-ball the new one and you need the right tools.

Needles to say that the last letters in the name are important.
For example, 82801GBM is not the same with 82801FBM, the hub rev is different. Also the same ICH version is packed for mobile or desktop, having different pin layout. So, use exaclty the same suffix.
