Hello,

I just recently purchased a used ThinkPad R51. It arrived with the drive wiped, but I was able to boot a Windows setup CD and install Windows XP. After I finished the install I went to access the BIOS to change the boot order and was greeted by a password prompt. I just hit "enter" and was taken to the BIOS screen, but in read-only "user mode". I am still able to boot from the optical drive and the hard disk and run the machine perfectly normally. The odd thing is that the icon shown at the password prompt is the "Power-On Password" icon (a box resembling a computer monitor next to a lock). Clearly this is not a power-on password, since I am not prompted for the password at any time other than when I try to access the BIOS. I'm thinking it's a supervisor password, but the POP icon confuses me. Has anyone ever experienced this before? Is this most likely a supervisor password, as I suspect? I have read the sticky and feel confident I can retrieve the supervisor password using the SIPROG method, I just want to make sure that it's the supervisor password that I'm actually looking for first.

Thanks

Hello,

You're right, it's the SVP all day long. SVP and POP share the same icon/logo.

The eeprom is underneath the WIFI card, remove the keyboard, palmrest and WIFI if in place. SIPROG should do it if you're in a hurry.

Good luck!

Thanks for that, just wanted to double check so I know what I'm facing. I'm going to be too busy to deal with this for a couple weeks, but I'll give the SIPROG method a shot when I've got a little more time. Looks like a pretty simple assembly.
