|
|
Hi, I am having a problem with my Dell C840. I am using dial up to the internet. I normally use a XIRCOM model connected to the PCMCIA connector via COM 4, a J11 phone line connectorand it works fine.
However, I have just tried dial up using the Modem J11 socket located on the left side of the laptop, but keep getting " no dial tone " message.
I have tried using this with the XIRCOM card disconnected, but still get no results.
Device hardware shows a PCTEL 2304WT V.9x MDC modem connected to COM 3, which when tested shows an ok function report, but I have no idea whether the Modem socket of the C840 is this com 3 port.
or not.
Does any kind person out there have any ideas as to how I can dial up using the C840 Modem socket instead of the PCMCIA, as the XIRCOM modem card is size 3 and covers the other PCMCIA socket, thus making it unuseable.
If anybody replies, please treat me as an absolute computer dumbo.
Kind regards. |

The modem's input circuit could be damaged due to some over voltage from phone line, it is a common issue.
It has a passive protection circuit made with some zenner diodes and some capacitors, one of them maybe is damaged.
The modem must be on a daughter board, you have to simply replace that., is not worth to repair it.
Besides any PCMCIA modem is way better than that. _________________ Victor Voinea
