Is the Driven programmer is to be more safe for the EEPROM (less risk of burning the eeprom with Driven) that the simple one ?

I have everything I need except that MAX232A chip, none of the 2 electronic shops here have it. I had to place an order for that chip and it may take 1 week, so I was thinking about making the Simple one instead of the Driven one.

I only need to recover SVP password and I probably wont need to re-program the eeprom, so, is the Simple one ok for me ?

Thank you very much

I have 2 other questions..

On the simple and driven diagram we can see a power supply and it's written "Required for unsoldered eeproms" Does it mean that we need power only if we are removing the eeprom from the laptop ?

People really do this ? ... I would be very affraid to remove that chip.. everything is so small in there.

Last question for the Wolfman, on your pictures I can see that you are using Minigrabbers. I bought some, but they are way too big to hang on these little chip legs (I have the 8 pins 24rf08) Did you really use the minigrabbers ?

Thanks again ! A lot of useful infos on this forum

Welcome to the board!

Both circuits are safe if you make them right. They are in fact RS232 to TTL adapters, converting the COM port signals and adapting them for the eeprom signals. The difference is that driven-i2cprog is not dependant on the COM port current (it is a true "interface", indeed), thus is more reliable.

Both circuits can be used to read/write the chip.

Yes, exactly. But no need to unsolder the eeprom in this case, the schematic diagram represents the interface for programming eeproms as a general solution.

Good luck!

No, no--the minigrabbers are only for connecting the SCA, SCL, and GND lines from the breadboard to the kynex wires soldered to the 24RF08. You're right, the smallest minigrabber is still too large for the tiny pins on the 24RF08. I found someone with better eyes than mine and a fine-tipped soldering iron and got him to solder the three leads on.
