I was looking on eBay for a MAX232A chip and I came across this. Is there any reason something like this wouldn't work?

How would you connect it? Configure the device with a CTS/RTS handshake and tie SDA to Tx/Rx and SCL to CTDT on the 6-pin header?

No, that doesn't work without mods. It 's made to be an in/out port for PICs.
