|
|
I have an old 570e running Windows 2000.
At boot up, I am getting 0189 error. I have done some research and established that the error is "invalid RFID configuration information area. The EEPROM checksum is not correct"
Fortunately , all I need to do is press "Esc" at the 0189 error and the 570e continues the boot process and Windows 2000 starts up OK.
However , I would like to find a fix for the 0189 error. I guess the eeprom is corrupted - the UUID just appears as a string of "fffff's" rather than hex numbers.
Hopefully , there is a fix without having to dismantle the 570e to gain access to the eeprom!! Possible fixes might include :
- flashing with later version of BIOS
- using Hardware Maintenance disk to create a new UUID.
Does anybody have any ideas about what causes the 0189 error and the best fix?
Thanks |

- Flashing a new BIOS is worthless, the UUID is not in the BIOS chip
- HMD can be used only with virgin boards usually, not with corrupted UUID's
This is indeed related wtih UUID, meaning UUID is corrupt or block's checksum is wrong. From my experience I found UUID corruption is 99% of cases, we provide a fix to this by writing a new UUID in the original eeprom dump and reflash the chip with W24RF08. _________________ Victor Voinea

Hi Victor. Thanks for the feedback.
So it looks like I will need to dismantle another of my Thinkpad collection !!!!
Thanks to your help I previously found the BIOS password for my old 600E and 380XD!!!
Do you know where the eeprom is located in a 570E - is it a full or partial dismantle?
Any idea what caused the checksum error in the first place? Is it OK to just carry on pressing "Esc" at the 0189 error?
Thanks |

If you remove the keyboard, you'll find the prom above the palmrest, on the bottom-left side, right close to the USB.
Such errors are happening due to a power loss at POST time, this is the common cause. The UUID block contains also the MAC serial, so if that data is corrupted, it will be better to fix it sooner or later. _________________ Victor Voinea
