Hello Victor and All,

To begin with I'm old, feeble and new at this..... so please be gentle

I’ve read your posts and admire your knowledge and patience. Possibly you could share some with me.

First off, I am a retired elevator man with 40 years experience installing, repairing and modernizing all types of elevators.

I have checked my wiring again & again and could not find a mistake.

The computer is IBM R40 #27222 at this point I don’t think you need any more information.

My Procedure

Installed and ran R24RF08 v2.0b & IBMpass v2.1 Lite no problems with install.

Soldered 2 wires to the 24RF08 are located under the hard drive caddy (see pic #1) brought them out of the computer, where they were labeled, cut and striped.

A. Built the interface device

B. Connected the interface to the com port on my desk top.

C. Clipped the ground, SDA, and SCL to the wires extending from the laptop.

D. Opened the C prompt on the desk top. Typed;

cd c:\ hit enter than typed C:\ALLservice\24RF08\r24rf08 dump. bin (did not hit enter)

E. Turned on the Laptop, waited until password prompt (see pic # 4)

F. Closed toggle switch in series with SDA & SCL

G. Hit enter on the desktop it displayed the following msg.

Initializing timer….26448 OK!

ERROR: Circuit not found or bus error!

Additional info:

1. Tried procedure on 2 different desktops
2. Checked resistance first at the EPROM and after wires attached, with digital MultiMeter. Both readings were 7.9K.
3. Checked ground between laptop & desktop.
4. Removed wires from the EPROM to start all over again.

Hope this is enough information and thank you very much for your time.
Regards, Jim

Hello there Jim,

I won't doubt your ability to build the simple interface, but I still require to see it myself, as I couldn't find pic#1, etc....mentioned in your post.

So please post a few pictures of it and include an image with the DB9 female conector too. I can only help if I see something, you know.

I don't get it. 7.9K on what? What resistance have you checked?

All the best.

Hi Victor, Many thanks for your prompt reply.

I set up the pic and a little more info on this site.

Good old Fluke's, I have an old one laying around here too Smile

I wish to see the interface in a close captioned image. I also require to see the serial DB9 in details. If you can add at the end of the page will be just fine.

The resistance you have messured there, between the two eeprom's legs, has no relevance whatsoever.
Instead of that make sure the wires do indeed make a proper contact to the eeprom legs, and also the reistors used are 2.2Kohm

Now, to check the interface with itester and the fluke voltmeter:

1. Close all programs, all.
2. Connect the interface to COM1. Do not connect the SDA&SCL wires to the locked laptop!!
3. Execute itester.exe (from the same folder), leave invert box unchecked and click <Connect>

After about 10 seconds, the program will switch the "SDA&SCL out" out value. The other one, "SDAin" must be IDENTICAL to it.
Then both values must switch together after each 5 seconds. 1-1, 0-0, 1-1 and so on and so forth.
Using a voltmeter, check the voltage between GND and SDA then GND and SCL.

SCL(1) = 4.0V..5.1V
SCL(0) = -0.6V (negative)
SDA(1) = 3.7V..5.1V
SDA(0) = -0.6V (negative)

If all above are correct, the interface and port are suppose to work.

Good luck!
