Victor...a huge thanks for this information. Just a note to anybody contemplating trying this procedure.....
If you try this and ruin your motherboard, you will need a new motherboard. If you don't try it, and take the IBM advice, you will need a new motherboard.
In short you have nothing to lose. The Eprom legs are a bit tricky to solder to (I am reasonably skilled). Take your time, and don't forget the ESD precautions.
I unlocked a 600X on the first try, and saved a hefty fee to the manufacturer.
I love depriving large companies of unnecessary fees. Thanks Victor. |

Dave,
I know that this note is too late, but you didn't have to solder onto the legs of the EEPROM, nor did you have to remove the motherboard from the laptop. If you ever need to do this again, take a look at this thread:

for my easier solution to attaching the wires to a 600X. Only the keyboard and CPU needs to be removed. Connection points are to two chip resistors and a ground pad on the top side of the motherboard.

Ray,
thanks for the info...I'll have to try that next time I find a likely candidate for sale!
Found this while browsing as well...

Some guy reckons the password can be unlocked using this software...not too sure though.
Maybe Victor would like to check it out? |

Genier's cmospwd is an old tool (WIN console and DOS), that has only standard scancodes and a lot of errors regarding TPs eeprom architecture. It cannot unlock laptops, only to dump and reveal the CMOS password location of some known BIOSes models, and a quick killcmos procedure that is useless with today machines (speaking of laptops).
Grenier researches were very interesting at that time and cmospwd became a "classic", but unfortunatelly not too usefull for laptops.
I suggest you to use IBMpass 2.0 that is a dump editor specially built and tested for TPs and has included alternate scancodes used by R series. Also Dell dumps are suitable to work with it. SONY VAIO SHR1 code included also in IBMpas Pro, which we think to launch as soon as possible after we will include PC8394 support for t43-R52-Z60 |
